Pinterest: Recent Projects
I love Pinterest. It is by far my favorite website.
I have made several projects due to being inspired by things I've seen there. It's exactly what I need to get my creative juices flowing! (ew saying juices flowing sounds so...gross.)
The most recent projects I made were birthday gifts for my parents.
Historically I have had a struggle thinking of thoughtful gifts for people. I have a few friends (Melinda, Steph) that are SO easy to buy for because they love distinct things and they often mention what they love. I do that too. But most people don't love one certain thing or they buy everything they could possibly ever need or want, or they are SO picky or only have expensive taste, so it's hard. And that is where I find myself every time my parents' birthdays roll around (they are 6 days apart).
This year I was determined to gift thoughtfully and cheaply since money is not overflowing right now. I thought long and hard about their gifts and was very inspired.
The beauty of Pinterest is that you can pin ideas to inspiration boards and view them later.
The first idea I had was for my mom.
My brother, his wife and kids recently moved to Maui, living their amazing dream, but devastating my parents who desperately miss their grandkids. Brett, Neely and I live in San Diego which isn't as far away as Maui but isn't that easy to visit often either. Both of my parents, but especially my mom actively hurt for the presence of their kids and grandkids.
I had the idea of drawing map of Hawaii and a map of California. I then stitched a red heart over Maui and over San Diego to symbolize where my mom's heart is. I found the perfect quote for this project, "There are two lasting bequests we can give our children: One is roots, the other is wings.- Hodding Carter, Jr." I painted and distressed the matting inside of the frame and voila! Her gift was complete! The ONLY picture I have is below, a cell phone picture, because I thought I would be able to take a picture of it hanging on her wall if I ever visit her. Sadly the United States Postal Service broke the frame into a zillion pieces so the gift is in shambles. But she loved it all the same and really appreciated the thought put into it! And when someone appreciates your handmade item, there is nothing like that in the world!
The second project I did was for my dad. I knew I wanted to paint and frame some quote for him, I just didn't know which one. Since my dad is an author as well as a musician, I knew it had to be something about music or writing. I literally spent over a week googling various quotes, writing them down, and thinking about them, until I searched through my "Words" board on Pinterest and found the perfect CS Lewis quote. I decided to paint several vintage book pages and use those as a background for the quote. My original idea was to cut each letter by hand but with a toddler, time-wise that wasn't realistic. I experimented with running the quote through the printer (on each painted page) and I love how it turned out. Luckily his didn't get ruined in transit and he told me it's in his office.
I was very pleased with how it turned out and in the frame it looks amazing! I should have scanned it before I sent it, but oh well.
I don't know how many more handmade gifts I'll make in the future because it's a lot of work and thought and preparation and when things happen such as the frame getting smashed into pieces it is such a letdown. I was sad on the day they received the gifts, because it wasn't how I had imagined it to be, but I'm pretty much over it now.
Things I learned from these two projects:
- BUBBLE WRAP EVERYTHING BEFORE SHIPPING (which is a huge DUH but for some reason I did not. Hence the smashed frame.)
- Don't build things up in your mind
Have you made any projects lately? I'd love to hear about them! If not, get some ideas from Pinterest and get busy creating!
Mini-Shoot: Neely in the field
This was so fun to shoot. Neely was able to be herself and explore and I was able to get some really great shots! Brett was absolutely the best PA I could ask for, as always!
I've been really deliberate about the shots I take lately. When I first started using a DSLR I would take hundreds of shots hoping I would get at least 5 good ones. Now I take way less and have so many more to chose from! From this shoot, it was just a ten minute quickie on the side of the road in a field somewhere, I have over 15 good ones out of about 35-40. I'd say that's a great ratio!
Within the next month I'm going to be shooting my friend's family so I'll be sure to post pictures up here. I am still building up my portfolio so that I can get my website up and running. Once I get my site up then all of my photography and photography-related blog posts will be over there. :)

Free Children's Prints!
I made these prints for Neely's room quite some time ago. I printed them on 8.5x11 paper!
Since I've found so many great free prints on the internet I decided to make them available for free to you!
Click the picture and it'll take you to Google Docs where you can download it. (it doesn't look pixelated in google docs) Please let me know if you download it, or take a pic of it hanging in your home!
This is what it looks like in a cheap Ikea frame!

Kindness

Everyone wins when people are kind.
You never know what kind of day or week someone is having.
Smile, speak kindly, do nice things for others.
You just may save someone's life!
Kindness is on my mind.
I have been having an extremely dark and stressful week and unkind words or actions are something that I do not need.
I don't have any personal pictures to share today, just a plea to everyone:
PLEASE BE KIND TO OTHERS.

17 Months

August has been such a whirlwind I can't believe it has already been a month since I last posted her monthly photo!
The chalk picture represents my life perfectly.
I go throughout my day straightening and cleaning and trying to keep a semblance of order in our house and Neely trails behind making messes. Not "messing things up", but making them better.
How are messes better, you ask?
I'd much rather have a messy home filled with Neely than a spotless home without her.
We are absolutely head over heels for our Neely Bear.

Just Remember

When times get tough, as they surely do, all I need to do is look at her face and remember that it's worth it.
When she's grown she won't care if I had a career or if we always had a brand new car or fancy things to wear, she will care that I was there to kiss every boo-boo, see her every "first", take her on daily adventures and cuddled her when she needed it.
(These are things I need to remind myself when the stress of life threatens to bring me under.)
Linking up with:

Picky Picky
Ever since Neely began to feed herself it has been difficult to find food that she'll actually try much less eat. If it looks different than what she's been used to, it will not go into her mouth. I have, on several occasions, forced food into her mouth knowing that she would like it. And you know what? Every single time she did. (mothers know best.)
In other words, the 3 meals per day and snack times in between are a struggle for me mentally because I have to some how some way make sure she is getting nutrition (more nutrition than yogurt alone).
Although she will be 17 months in two days, and I should be a pro at this feeding a toddler thing, I am surprised every single day when it's lunch or dinner time.
Snack times are easier, air-popped popcorn (she LOVES it), chips & salsa, or, raisins. She's finally old enough to chew raisins and her poop isn't 100% undigested raisins. Hah/barf.

Do you have a hard time feeding your toddler? What do meal times consist of? I need ideas!

Lea Salonga -Too Much For One Heart (Special edition)
I heard read the lyrics of this song from Miss Saigon on a blog and immediately looked it up on Youtube. As a mom, this song left me breathless in its beauty.
And i have given birth to a speckle of dust,
to a sparkle of light
to a small hint of life.
to a sparkle of light
to a small hint of life.
Frail as a flower in the morning
is this tiny work of art
when i see her face before me
this is too much for one heart.
I want time to stop right here
make perfection last forever
in which i could disappear, disappear.
make perfection last forever
in which i could disappear, disappear.
here, you will see the best of you and me
for life stories combining
in this life we’ve begun I have been living with such wonder
that my soul could burst apart...
it's too much for one heart.

Naptime Adventure
It was one of those days. Neely did not want to take a nap.
I did.
You see, I think I am part Spanish in that I require a daily siesta to make it through until bedtime.
But no, she was having none of it. And believe me, I tried. I left her in her crib for an HOUR. She played, she cried, she talked to herself...
And finally...well finally I gave up.
Now every mom knows there is a critical point in the non-napping day where you can either roll with it and be creative, or you can be upset and stressed out.
I opted for not having a crappy day.
I decided to take my little wide-eyed girl on an apple juice date to Starbucks.
Recently Neely has been obsessed with keysh (keys).
So of course she had to have her keysh with her. I put them in her purse and we were on our way.

She daintily held her purse the entire way there.
It took us s o l o n g to get to Starbucks, as toddlers want to explore every little thing they discover. Which was fine by me since the object of this game was to exhaust her.
Once we got to Starbucks I ordered her a box of apple juice and a green tea latte for me.

After we were done we walked through the weekly Farmer's Market only stopping to listen to a 12 year old boy singing his heart out while playing guitar. We (I) then decided to go to the beach since we haven't been since I hurt my foot.
We both had such a great time I was SO glad we went down there!

It was such a better time than being upset that she wasn't sleeping and watching the clock until 5 so I could have a glass of wine! (I don't do that...I've just heard that people do that.)
I love lazy days with my girl.

Fall

Don't get me wrong, I love summer. I love the beach, I go most days of the week. I love barbequing, I love parties, I love camping, I love summer dresses and bikinis, I love it all.
But there is something about the fall that makes me ache. I can't shake the desire for crisp autumn weather. Even in the best part of the summer, the warm golden days that last forever, I have a tiny voice in my mind reminding me of autumn.
I love back-to-school displays at the store, I love sweaters and hats and boots. I love blankets and heaters and warm cozy mornings sipping coffee. I love my birthday and I love the togetherness of Thanksgiving.
Mostly I love the memories of neighborhood walks with Brett. Ever since we've lived here we have taken long walks and the season that sticks out in my mind is fall. We walk through neighborhoods and dream. We hold hands and admire landscapes. We breathe in the sharp cool air and marvel at the changing leaves (although San Diego has about three leaves that change color each year!). We laugh and kiss and enjoy each other. He walks with me because he knows it makes me happy. I walk with him because he is my heart, my favorite, my rock.
Each time the seasons change they symbolize more togetherness.
We go on.
I love him, I love him, I love him.
What about you? What is your favorite season and why?
Friday
Neely and I have been sick the past couple days (my mom came over and took care of us yesterday!!) but today we were feeling better. Here is our Friday, complete with a surprise visit from Brett, trip to our favorite junk store and quality time at the beach with GG & Papa.

These are the photos Neely will look back on in twenty years and smile about. She will be SO glad I take 50 pictures every day.
I had edited this to add something profound and it was 2 paragraphs but stupid firefox crashed (shocker) and I lost my stuff.
sad.
